Artist's Statement on 20.05.2008

"Roaming"

+
In this portfolio I was initially trying to find an appropriate presentation format suitable to deliver the literary connotations in within. Style is a natural and inevitable gesture for all painters and I was lucky the struggle was not long. Although I am keen of detail depiction, I chose to wipe out all the faces and bodies of my subjects through coloring them in flat black. Apart from figure sizes these characterless humans differs in the way they dress or ornate; they are either positioned in a nihilistic exterior or situated in the vicinity of certain objects to reveal their helpless conditions. My thematic focus have shifted when I came back to Hong Kong: in light of the living realities I have to face, my drawn characters at this stage represent a tension between social civilians and the material world.

開始創作這些作品時，我希望尋找一種合適又得體的形式，將我熟悉的插圖式畫面和文學性隱喻結合到其中。對於畫畫的人來説，風格既是自然而成又是必須刻意經營的。幸好我沒有在此掙扎太久。雖然我一向對描繪細節很感興趣，但最後我決定把畫面人物的面目全部刪去，以黑色小人將人的個性模糊處理。人物是一群沒有個性的人。然而他們之間的區別，可見于隱約相異的身形和衣飾，他們身處的空間一樣虛無飄渺，人物依附于近景的一些物體之上，以表現生活中的無依感。後來，我的注意力開始轉移。也許是因爲回到了香港，不得不面對另一種現實生活，我仍然沿用這種人物的描繪方法，但更傾向于表達社會中人與物質生活的關係。

"Garden Guide - Always On the Way"
( originally written in Chinese for the exhibition "Garden Guide")

I lived just like a traveler in the past few years when I was studying fine art in Guangzhou.In fact, my life as a tourist started much earlier since my family’s migration in the 1980’s. I have good opportunity to experience different cultures but I also found myself not able to carry so much on mind and getting overloaded. Sometimes, I try to release my memories, passions and even try to abandon some works by myself in order to "lose weight". In this exhibition, I would like to manage my collection of woks completed in the past few years, show them to the public and pack them as a luggage for transport along my journey of life.

《花園導遊——生活在途中》2007年4月2日

在美院的這幾年總是過着遊客般的生活。實際上，我的遊客生涯在更早之前就隨着家庭的移居而開始了。旅行般的生活有更多見識新鮮事物的機會，同時也會容易丟失已有的東西。行李太沉重就無法繼續旅途，有時一些朋友、一段感情、一張畫就這樣有意無意地被放棄掉。這次展覽我希望將這幾年間一些零碎的作品集中到一起，成爲一個事件，好在記憶中打包，方便托運。同時也當一次導遊，領着各位朋友遊覽一下我的“私家花園”。
